Gbarnga Community Learning Center

SCW Germany has teamed up with local and international NGOs to develop a Community Learning Center in Gbarnga, Liberia. Gbarnga is the capital of Bong County and has a population of approximately 45,000 people. Like many cities in Liberia, Gbranga was greatly affected by 14 years of civil war. During the war, educational opportunities were slim and many school facilities were destroyed.

In 2010, the grassroots organization Sustainable Human Empowerment, reached out for help to make their dream of a community library in Gbarnga a reality. Organizations in the United States, Europe, and Africa, including Hope for Hope for Children of Africa , SCW:US, SCW:Germany, Hermes House Band , and Youth Action International, agreed to help.

Together with Sustainable Human Empowerment, local and national government representatives, and Gbarnga community members, these organizations have formed a coalition to design, build, and operate a community learning center. SCW:US is providing planning and design services and financial support.

The Gbarnga Community Learning Center will be a public facility, open to all community members. It will include a library, meeting space, and classrooms for adult literacy programs, early childhood education, and music and arts education. Construction began in June 2013 and is well underway. For more information about this project, read the Project Proposal.
